January Grades 1-2 Book Club: Fantastic Mr. Fox

For January's Book Club, we read Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl. Cameron, Chase, Colten, Hallie, Luna, Matthew, Reis, and Zack were present. This is what we talked about!

Who was your favorite character in Fantastic Mr. Fox? Why?

-Mr. Fox. Because he's the main character.
-Mr. Fox. Because he's awesome. He finds a way for his family and friends not to die.
-Mr. Fox because his tail got shot off.
-Mr. Fox because he's so talented. He can get away from stuff very fast.
-Bogus, the fat guy, because he eats chicken and dumplings and I hate chicken.

Who was your least favorite character? Why?

-Bean because he eats (drinks) cider and I hate cider.
-Bean because he eats apples from a tree and I don't like them from a tree.
-Bean because how does he survive not eating?
-All of the farmers are mean and terrible.
-Boggis and Bean and Mr. Fox and Mrs. Fox. I only like the chicken.
-The farmers because they were trying to kill Mr. Fox and his family.

Did you have a favorite scene? What was it?

-It's funny when, at the end of the book, the farmers are still just sitting there, waiting for Mr. Fox and friends to come out of the hole.
-The scene with Mabel and the rat. Mr. Fox stole the rat's cider.
-The whole book was my favorite scene.
-When they had the big feast.

Do you think it was okay that Mr. Fox was stealing from the farmers? What do you think you would do if you were in Mr. Fox's position?

-Stealing from the farmers was okay.
-I would chew my stomach instead of stealing.
-It would be okay if you were as starving as Mr. Fox and his friends.
-I would steal for the whole week. On the first day of the next week, I would steal from a different farmer.
-No, because he was stealing. Stealing is bad no matter what.
-Who would want to arrest a fox?

Do you think that the farmers got what they deserved at the end of the book? Do you think they ever left their spots over the fox hole, waiting for Mr. Fox (and his family and friends) to come out?

-I think that they stayed there the whole time. They deserved it. They were bad.

We then worked on worksheets and did a Roald Dahl word search to talk more about the book.

Please rate this book from 1-5, with 1 being a terrible book and 5 being one of the best books you've read.

-One 1
-One 2
-Two 4
-One 5

For February's Book Club, we will be reading Knights of the Kitchen Table by Jon Scieszka. We will meet on Wednesday, February 6 at 3:00 p.m.

Joe receives a magic book for his birthhday present from his uncle. Joe, Fred and Sam are transported to a time when evil knights, fire-breathing dragons and vile-smelling giants roamed the land.

Please be sure to register for Book Club and pick up your copy of the book at the Circulation Desk.
