April Grades 1-2 Book Club Suggestions

The Birchbark House by Louise Erdrich ; with illustrations by the author.

Omakayas, a seven-year-old Native American girl of the Ojibwa tribe, lives through the joys of summer and the perils of winter on an island in Lake Superior in 1847.

Clementine by Sara Pennypacker

While sorting through difficulties in her friendship with her neighbor Margaret, eight-year-old Clementine gains several unique hairstyles while also helping her father in his efforts to banish pigeons from the front of their apartment building.

El Deafo by Cece Bell ; color by David Lasky.

"Going to school and making new friends can be tough. But going to school and making new friends while wearing a bulky hearing aid strapped to your chest? That requires superpowers! In this funny, poignant graphic novel memoir, author/illustrator Cece Bell chronicles her hearing loss at a young age and her subsequent experiences with the Phonic Ear, a very powerful--and very awkward--hearing aid. The Phonic Ear gives Cece the ability to hear--sometimes things she shouldn't--but also isolates her from her classmates. She really just wants to fit in and find a true friend, someone who appreciates her as she is. After some trouble, she is finally able to harness the power of the Phonic Ear and become "El Deafo, Listener for All." And more importantly, declare a place for herself in the world and find the friend she's longed for"-- from publisher's web site.

March Grades 1-2 Book Club: The Hundred Dresses

For March's Grades 1-2 Book Club, we read The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes. Cameron, Chase, Colten, Luna, Matt, and Reis  were present. This is some of what we talked about!

We used a Comprehension Quiz by Scholastic.com in order to guide the conversation.
There was quite a bit of discussion regarding bullying and being a bystander and/or participant in bullying.

I asked the kids to rank this book between 1 and 5, with 1 being one of their least favorite books and 5 being one of the best.

-One 3
-One 4
-Four 5s
