February Grades 1-2 Book Club: The Chicken Squad

For February's Grades 1-2 Book Club, we read The Chicken Squad by Doreen Cronin. Annemarie, Ben, Chase, Colten, Eden, Joseph and Violet were present.

Why does Tail, the squirrel, faint when he sees JJ?

-Because he's afraid of everything.
-The squirrel is afraid of the shovel.
-JJ chases Tail and it makes Tail nervous.

The chicks think the big, scary thing is a UFO. What is it really?

-A BBQ

Who is Barbara and why does she spray Tail with the hose?

-Barbara is the woman who lives in the house that the chickens live at.
-She sprays Tail with the hose because he's not where he's supposed to be.

Do the chicks ever realize that the UFO is a BBQ?

-No.

Tail doesn’t know his shapes very well. Which shapes do the chicks help him learn?

-rhombus, triangle, circle

Who is telling the story?

-JJ is telling the story.

Why would the author use JJ Tully to tell the story? Would the chicks be reliable narrators? Is JJ reliable?

-The author used JJ as the narrator because he is calm and reliable.

Sugar determines (p. 47) that the big, scary thing is a UFO. What is a UFO? What do you know about UFO’s? Are they real? Why do you think that?

-Unidentified Flying Object (UFO)
-They fly, they're spheres
-UFOs are not real
-UFOs are real and I've seen them on TV
-How could they be real if a dog talked

JJ seems gruff, impatient, and critical of the chicks. How do you think he really feels about them?

-Caring
-JJ doesn't really feel that way about them because if he did, he wouldn't worry about them

We then worked on some fun puzzles and drawing pages that relate to the book.

Please rate this book from 1-5, with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best.

-Four 4s
-Two 5s

For February's book club, we will be reading Haggis and Tank Unleashed by Jessica Young.

We will be meeting on Wednesday, March 11 at 4:00 p.m.  Please be sure to pick up your copy of the book at the Circulation Desk (available on the day of this book club) and register (so Miss Lisa knows how many snacks to buy!).
