December Grades 1-2 Book Club: Stink: The Incredible Shrinking Kid

For December's Book Club, we read Stink: The Incredible Shrinking Kid by Megan McDonald. Cameron, Chase, Colten, Luna, Matthew, Reis, Sergius, and Zack were present. This is what we talked about!

Who was your favorite character in Stink? Why?

-I liked Judy because she was bossy. If Stink was president, he could boss Judy around.
-I liked Stink because he's stinky. He carried the newt around.
-Stink because he's the littlest one is his class.
-I don't have a favorite character.
-Newt because he stink.
-Newt because I like that he is in the lizard family.
-Stink because he's the main character.

Who was your least favorite character? Why?

-Newt because he's stinkier than Stink.
-Stink because he stinks at getting taller.
-Judy because she's the stinkiest person in the book.
-I didn't have a least favorite.
-Stink because he's a little bit mean. He's mean to his sister.
-Judy because she lost the newt down the drain.
-Judy because she used her hands to try to get Newton out, when she should have used the net.
-Judy because she bosses Stink around and she's mean.

Did you have a favorite scene? What was it?

-The cat sticking his tongue out.
-When Stink was at the nurse's office.
-I liked it when Stink said that he liked James Madison.
-The illustrations showing Judy measuring Stink: their feet looked huge. Judy's feet are bigger than her mom's feet.

Has there ever been something about yourself that you were not very confident about? How did others make you feel about it?

-I wasn't confident about raising the mainsail on my boat but then my dad made me feel okay about it.
-I was confident about people raising the blue ribbon flag on my school.

Were Stink and Judy friends? If you have siblings, please describe your relationship.

-My younger brother is really mean. He's mean to everybody I know.
-I have a sister named Emma and sometimes she punches me.
-I have 2 brothers. I have a good relationship with them.
-My brother and I are good friends. Sometimes we have a fighting exercise.

Sophie wrote an acrostic poem about her favorite first lady, Dolley Madison. Let's write an acrostic poem, using our own first names!

-LISA: Likes Book Club/Is a Librarian/Says what she means/Adores her cats!
-BILLY: Billy likes hot dogs/Is a god/Like an airplane/Like a fireball/Yo, Billy Bob Junior

-we ran out of time before answering this question!

For January's Book Club, we will be reading Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl.  We will meet on Wednesday, January 2 at 3:00 p.m.

Someone's been stealing from the three meanest farmers around, and they know the identity of the thief—it's Fantastic Mr. Fox! Working alone they could never catch him; but now fat Boggis, squat Bunce, and skinny Bean have joined forces, and they have Mr. Fox and his family surrounded. What they don't know is that they're not dealing with just any fox—Mr. Fox would rather die than surrender. Only the most fantastic plan can save him now.
