September Grades 1-2 Book Club: My Father's Dragon

For September's Grade 1-2 Book Club, we read My Father's Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett. Chase, Colton, Eden and Edward were present. Here's some of what we discussed!

What items did Elmer bring with him in his sack?

-jackknife
-2 dozen pink lollipops
-23 tangerines
-chewing gum
-magnifying glass
-boots
-rubber bands

Would you like to have traveled with Elmer? Why or why not?

-Yes, because I would love to see a dragon that breathes fire on me
-Yes, I would like to go on an adventure to beat up all the animals
-No, I don't want to see a dragon or go on an adventure
-Yes, because I would like to see him tricking all of the animals. When I see the dragon, he will blow fire in my face and set off the bomb in my face.

How would you describe Wild Island?

-as a jungle, on a beach, with a river-the animals had to go around the river to get to the other side
-the animals had to use a dragon to get across.
-the animals weren't nice to the dragon

Let's talk about the animals that Elmer encounters. What happened with each animal?

-they all got tricked
-the rhino spent a ton of time brushing his tusk clean
-Elmer braided the lion's mane
-he tricked the tigers into chewing their gum and checking each other's mouths and they were distracted
-Elmer tricked the gorilla with the magnifying glass and the monkey came to take off his fleas
-he tricked the alligators into following each other by attaching lollipops to their tails

Would you say that Elmer is brave? Why?

-Elmer is brave because he saw all those animals that wanted to kill him but he survived
-a fisherman told him that no one ever came back from Wild Island but he went anyway

Pretend you could design your own island. Tell us all the details about it.

-every animal, even a cuckoo dog
-my island would be full of milk and cinnamon toast crunch and millions of dollar and gum and Chips Ahoy and a huge TV screen and the coolest house
-my island would be full of candy, millions of dollars and O's (the cereal) and gum and Chips Ahoy and a huge TV screen and the coolest house
-my island would be filled with outdoor spaces. A water park, an amusement park, a wave pool, a skating rink, a movie theater and maybe an aquarium and a quintillion dollars

We then worked on some worksheets, including a word search.

Please rate this book from 1-5, with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best.

For October's book club, we will be reading

Toys Go Out : Being the Adventures of a Knowledgeable Stingray, a Toughy Little Buffalo, and Someone Called Plastic by Emily Jenkins

Six stories relate the adventures of three best friends, who happen to be toys:
In the backpack, where it is very dark -- The serious problem of Plastic-ness -- The terrifying bigness of the washing machine -- The possible shark -- How Lumphy got on the big high bed, and lost something rather good looking -- It is difficult to find the right birthday present.

We will be meeting on Wednesday, October 2 at 3:00 p.m. Please be sure to pick up your copy of the book at the Circulation Desk and register for Book Club (so Miss Lisa knows how many snacks to buy!).
