October Grades 1-2 Book Club: I Survived the Battle of Gettysburg

For October's Grades 1-2 Book Club, we read I Survived the Battle of Gettysburg by Lauren Tarshis. Drew was present.

How old is Thomas?

Who was Thomas thinking about at the beginning of the book?

Clem, who was his cousin.

What do Thomas and Birdie do at the end of the chapter?

They ran away. Because the slave catchers were coming for Thomas.

What did Thomas and Birdie do when they ran away from the plantation? What time of day is it?

They ran away at night so that everyone would be asleep. No one would be able to spot them.

Who did Thomas and Birdie run into on their escape journey? Where was he hiding?

A Union soldier was hiding in a tree.

What did Thomas do that helped save the Yankee's life?

He threw a skunk at the Rebels.

Where will the soldiers be marching to for battle?

They're headed to Gettysburg.

Did the other men in the Union army regiment like Thomas and Birdie? What do you think they liked about the kids?

Yes, they remind them of their children.

What does Lester mean by "This is going to be another Fredericksburg"?

He meant that it could be a really bloody battle.

When Clem was writing words in the dirt instead of working in the fields, what did Mr. Knox do to him?

He whipped him.

What happened to Birdie that was really scary?

She was kidnapped.

What did the captain need right away?

What did Henry give Thomas to protect when he went into battle? What did he say to Thomas right before he went off to fight?

A book with pictures made by Henry's grandparent. Thomas and Birdie were going to live with Henry.

What happened to the characters of our story at Gettysburg, especially to Thomas and Henry?

Henry died after getting shot by a bullet shell. Thomas was injured but he survived.

Where did Thomas and Birdie end up after the battle?

What is Clem's new plan?

Clem is going back down South to help with the supply lines and then he'll come back to live with Thomas and Birdie.

Favorite Scene

The marching. But really every scene was a favorite scene.

Have you read other books like this, either an I Survived Book or one about the Civil War?

I have read almost all of the I Survived books and am interested in other Civil books.

Please rate this book from 1-5, with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best.

I rank it a 4!

For November's Book Club, we will be reading Alvin Ho: Allergic to Girls, School, and Other Scary Things by Lenore Look and illustrated by LeUyen Pham

"A young boy in Concord, Massachusetts, who loves superheroes and comes from a long line of brave Chinese farmer-warriors, wants to make friends, but first he must overcome his fear of everything."

We will be meeting on Wednesday, November 4 at 3:00 p.m.  Please be sure to pick up your copy of the book at the Circulation Desk (available on the day of this book club) and register (so Miss Lisa knows how many snacks to buy!). Please be sure to dress warmly for the weather. If the weather is too cold (or rainy or snowy!), we'll Zoom. Miss Lisa will send the link and password to those who have registered by 1 p.m. on the day of Book Club.
